The topic of this episode is stellar magnitudes. Stellar magnitudes are a logarithmic brightness scale that astronomers use to determine information about stars. Apparent magnitude is a measure of the relative brightness as viewed from earth, and absolute magnitude is an logarithmic power ratio indication, equal to a quarter of a dB.

Some discussion of what properties of a star can be determined from stellar magnitude measurement is discussed, including distance, radius, and temperature.
